Gua = to scrape or rub
Sha = reddish rash (petechiae), release of blood stagnation, or toxic energy with the flow of blood to surface of skin

Gua Sha is part of the system of East Asian Medicine, which uses a whole-system medical theory to analyze constitution and health complaints, diagnose imbalances in these systems, and treat patients with various tools such as acupuncture, cupping, herbs, exercise, breath work, and Gua Sha frictioning techniques. Although Gua Sha is the more well-known name for the technique, it also has deep histories throughout South East Asia. It’s known as Cao Yio in Vietnam, Kerokan in Indonesia, Khoud Lam in Laos, Ga Sal in Cambodia.

It is performed using uni-directional press-stroking massage movements to manipulate and stimulate specific energy lines and points along the face and body, which help break up blood stagnation, free toxic accumulation, promote lymphatic drainage and increase the life force energy that runs throughout our body.

Facial Gua Sha is one branch of this medicine and intended to be used in a simple way for health and beauty maintenance at home. It stimulates the activation of acupressure points that lift, tone, and bring about a vibrant glow from within. Facial Gua Sha uses your own body’s resources to heal and slow the visible signs of aging. This simple yet powerful therapy brings about a fundamental change in the skin by clearing stagnation and accumulation in the tissues and in the “channel pathways” of Eastern Asian Medical Theory. It accomplishes this whether you understand the theory or not, when practiced with correct technique.

The CJB Facial Gua Sha Facial self-care protocol has been carefully crafted to be both comprehensive and safe for everyday use by non-professionals. It combines a blend of facial massage modalities, including Gua Sha that are intended to create movement in the underlying tissue and support the systems and natural function of the skin. The specialized variety of techniques enable the renewal of the lymph, activate circulation, minimize the appearance of wrinkles, stimulate cell activity and the regeneration of the facial tissue for long-term results.

CJB Gua Sha + Facial Massage protocols are next level facial therapy intended as part of a holistic skincare regimen and not meant to be part of any diagnosis or internal treatment of skin conditions, unless directed by an accredited practitioner of East Asian Medicine Systems.

Gua Sha is all about the skin: what happens on it and under it.
